To Find Out Baby(s) Gender or Not? Our Twin Babies’ Gender Reveal Video
To find out the baby(s) gender (sex) or to not, that is the question! My husband and I decided to not find out the gender of our first born child. The second time around we thought we were going to do the same thing, until we found out we were going to have twins! Here is what we experienced with both options.
Not finding out the baby’s gender
I am not able to provide insight as to not finding out a multiple birth pregnancy but I did not find out for the pregnancy of my singleton daughter. When I was in nursing school, my internship was on a women’s birthing unit. I loved watching and assisting in child birth and working with mothers and babies. One of my favorite moments was when parents did not know the sex of the baby. We called them Mystery Babies. It is already so emotional and special when a baby is welcomed into the world but oh my goodness, when the father (or another significant other) gets to tell the mother, “It’s a boy!” I’m getting emotional and my heart is fluttering just thinking about it. It is truly, truly an amazing experience. I wanted this.
It took some convincing to my husband at first to not find out the gender. He actually really wanted to at first, he was just so excited and he couldn’t wait to find out! My husband tried to pursued me that he would be able to keep the secret from me if he was able to find out the gender from the doctor. HA! That’s funny.
Of course it was a little inconvenient to not know the sex of our first born child. However, there are actually some benefits to not finding out the gender. The biggest one is: people actually buy things off of your registry. When you know the gender, people are so excited and want to buy you baby clothes. Or you get so excited you buy everything pink or blue- even the big things like bassinets or carseats. Well, what happens when the second kid comes around and they are the opposite sex? Sure it doesn’t really matter but maybe buying some gender neutral things would have been a little bit more lasting? Pro tip: Buy general big items in a neutral color, like the stroller, highchair, carseats, bassinets, etc.
Another fun part about not knowing the gender is guessing! It’s fun spending the whole pregnancy discussing pregnancy baby gender myths and arguing with each other what they think and feel like the baby is going to be. I loved picking out baby names, so this way you get to pick out names for both genders.
One of the biggest inconveniences for not finding out the baby’s sex is not getting gender specific clothing. I tried to find gender neutral clothing for my first born and it didn’t go well. However, it really wasn’t that problematic because then once the baby was born people end up buying you baby clothes anyways! Problem solved!
In the end, when my daughter was born, it was magical. It was everything I hoped it would be. I really wanted to have a daughter first. I didn’t ever say it out-loud incase she was a boy but I did pray hard that she was a girl. The moment came and everyone in the delivery room was so excited too that we were having a mystery baby. I pushed her out and I looked down and my husband said, “It’s a girl!” Obviously, I was a hot blubbering, hormonal mess of happiness. If you are on the fence about not finding out the baby’s sex, I truly recommend you give this experience a chance!
Finding out the gender of our twin babies
Like I said, we thought we weren’t going to find out the sex of the baby this time around, but then we found out we were having twins. My husband and I then didn’t know if we should find out or not. We really did consider not finding out. However, we decided that because a twin pregnancy is considered a high risk pregnancy and we would be doing a lot of extra tests, it would be most beneficial and easiest if we knew the genders.
I am very glad we found out the sex for the twins this time around. I felt like I knew the babies a little more this time because I knew who they were. We also were able to name them before they were born, so again, we just felt closer to them before they were already born.
How we found out the twin babies’ genders
My husband and I decided that we were going to do the 11/12 week genetic testing for our babies because they were twins. We didn’t do this with our singleton, but this time around we wanted to know all we could because they were high risk. We were able to do a genetic blood test at this time that could tell us the babies’ sex.
I got the phone call from the OB office nurse when I was home alone. When the nurse said we were having one of each, a boy and a girl, I freaked! Again, this was secretly what I was hoping for! I was beyond excited but I had no one to share it with! I ended up immediately picking up my dog and running around the room jumping and screaming and crying with happiness. I’m sure my neighbors got a laugh out of that. When my husband go home I held a pink and a blue shirt in each hand behind my back. I had him then pick each hand to have him find out the babies’ genders. We jumped and cried and were overflowing with joy.
We didn’t tell anyone until we got confirmation at the 20 week ultrasound. My husband and I then went on our baby-moon to Florida. We didn’t know what we wanted to do for our gender reveal but finally we thought of this cute little idea. We had lots of fun shopping around for these newborn baby swimsuits and enjoyed filming this at the beach. People walking by would congratulate us and want to talk about any twins they knew. We Facetimed with our family afterwards. It was an extremely special moment that we thoroughly enjoyed. When the twins were born, it was a totally different experience. So much was happening and there were so many moving parts that finding out the babies’ sex then would have probably of gotten lost in the hustle. I still felt that rush of love and excitement, I finally got to meet my babies!
I wouldn’t change anything about finding out or not finding out the gender of each of our pregnancies. Either way you choose, it will be extremely wonderful!
