Today I was invited to share my narcolepsy journey Today I was invited to share my narcolepsy journey with some neuropsychology students at Hope College! I hope that sharing my story and spreading awareness will help others not feel alone and aid in their diagnostic journey or recovery. And to hopefully educate and decrease stigma around sleep disorders. I am always so honored and grateful when asked to share about my narcolepsy experience. I enjoy doing it, even if it uses up most of my spoons. 🥄
Thank you @hopecollege for having me!

As a #KnowNarcolepsyPartner, I’m teaming up to h As a #KnowNarcolepsyPartner, I’m teaming up to help raise awareness of narcolepsy during Sleep Awareness Week. Know Narcolepsy is an incredible resource that provides information and support for people living with narcolepsy.

As a person living with narcolepsy, finding people and resources to support me has played a crucial role in my understanding of narcolepsy.

When I was first diagnosed with narcolepsy I joined two virtual support groups. One group focused on women and mothers living with narcolepsy while the other was for people who were newly diagnosed. They were so helpful and I learned a lot from them.

I have found so much support in the narcolepsy community. I love connecting with people who understand what I’m going through. I also couldn’t do it without my loving husband, help from my family, and my supportive friends.

Resources and support are available for people living with narcolepsy. Visit KnowNarcolepsy.com for more information.

This week we went to Washington DC to speak at the This week we went to Washington DC to speak at the @project_sleep Advocacy Forum and participate in Capitol Hill Day. I shared my narcolepsy journey at the Forum and with 8 Congressmen and Senators to raise awareness of the Sleep Act. The Sleep Act would budget money in the CDC for sleep research, public awareness, and such. Between all that, my husband and I squeezed in time on National Mall, at museums, memorials, the Washington Monument, and the White House. And of course we ate a lot of great food! We had a blast! Thank you Project Sleep for this opportunity to spread awareness of narcolepsy.

Happy #worldnarcolepsyday this September day! Narc Happy #worldnarcolepsyday this September day!
Narcolepsy is something I live with everyday but thankfully with help I have my life back. Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects the sleep wake cycle. It causes excessive daytime sleepiness, disrupted nighttime sleep, hypnagogic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and cataplexy. @project_sleep @wakeupnarcolepsy @knownarcolepsy and other accounts are great places to check out for more information on sleep disorders.
As a #KnowNarcolepsy partner, I’m here to help a As a #KnowNarcolepsy partner, I’m here to help address the misconceptions about narcolepsy this World Narcolepsy Day. One misconception I hear is that since I slept well and napped, I shouldn’t be tired anymore. Well, as a person with narcolepsy, I don’t get quality sleep with disrupted nighttime sleep and hypnagogic hallucinations. I experience excessive daytime sleepiness, making me tired all the time no matter how much I sleep.

I spoke to psychology and neuroscience students during a Sleep Seminar, discussing sleep research, sleep disorders, and the importance of sleep. I had a blast! #KnowNarcolepsyPartner I am partnering with @KnowN #KnowNarcolepsyPartner I am partnering with @KnowNarcolepsy for Sleep Awareness Week to share my personal experiences with the narcolepsy symptom of excessive daytime sleepiness or EDS. EDS is the inability to stay awake and alert during the day, resulting in the uncontrollable need for sleep or unintentionally falling asleep. However, for me, EDS is more than just falling asleep.
